Hearings have commenced in the Whanganui Inquiry District with the next session staring on Monday August 27th, with Wai 655 presenting on Friday 31 August. It is worth noting that the historian Bruce Stirling noted in his evidence many of the issues regarding the nature of these early Crown transactions being akin to a marriage of the land to the settlers. He used much of David Armstrong’s material he put forward in his report on the Rangitikei Turakina transaction. He also noted the setting out of the boundary by Kawana Paipai, Aperahama Tipae and others in 1846 thereby ensuring that that information was available to the tribunal and their deliberations.
Wai 655 – Section 30 Application, preferences have been forwarded to the court in regard to the method for dealing with this case. The option the Runanga put forward was for the Judge to make his findings based upon the evidence already deposited, with a second preference being a judicial conference. Mediation was ruled out as being unlikely to progress this matter.
Funding - We continue to work through the issues regarding our funding application to CFRT. We have put a lot of work into the project plan and we look forward to a positive result.
Papakainga - One important issue for some of the hapu to consider is the location of Papakainga within the Santoft and Lismore Sands Forest. This will no doubt come up in hapu hui.
Newsletter - Once again this is to focus upon the AIP and will be coming out in August. There have been some delays in accessing material for tupuna photographs but this has been sorted
