We have had our first follow up meeting with Whanganui on Monday of this week. Discussions are in there early stages with representatives of Whanganui Iwi.
It was agreed that we put forward some of the detail of our assertions and then have discussions around any perceived interests Whanganui may have in areas that we state that are ours. Their Representative has carried out a great deal of research for Nga Paerangi and so has a substantive and open approach to our discussions.
It is proposed that we have our next meeting in two weeks time.
Over the last month we have started the draft hapu profiles documents which will provide the necessary information for hapu authorities to make decisions about their priorities for cultural redress.
Further work is required in terms of going out to various sites and photographing the sites getting more information from DOC and any other agencies and then adding this information into the profile documents in readiness for any hapu hui that are coming up.
Other information is also being sought from local government who manage some Crown owned properties within our rohe.
Lead negotiator Toko Kapea has been consulting with some contacts in Taupo regarding the forestry industry as this is a major feature of the Crown Assets register in our rohe.
The CFRT annual report has also come out with the accumulated rentals as at 31 March being as follows – Lismore Hill $3,101,577, Santoft $3,420,829, Lismore Sands $1,175,417, and Tangimoana $532,955. This information has been circulated around the negotiation team thus providing a real means to calculate some options for strategy in the negotiation process.
Toko is also working on some priorities regarding the commercial property schedules that were discussed at our last meeting in June.
The registration process has been steady with the total registered now over the 3200 mark. Some of our registration officers have found it a bit tough going as people get harder to find.
The Verification Committee has met and worked through some registrations and this remains ongoing work for the unit.
Discussion have been held regarding a paper on Other Iwi who reside inside the rohe of Ngati Apa who did not get land gifted to them by Ngati Apa. At this stage we haven’t commissioned a report for this
