Pourewa Accord - 17 Jun 2006
An important milestone was the signing of the Pourewa Accord, the official signing of the boundary agreement between Ngati Apa and Ngati Hauiti. On a freezing mid June morning a contingent of Ngati Apa met with Ngati Hauiti at Rata Marae to carry out rituals and sign documents which concluded a process which Grant Huwyler and Utiku Potaka drove for the last year or two. It was an enjoyable experience for all as we celebrated in the sharing of kai and exchange of taonga to mark the day and all it entailed.
Fisheries Assets Settled - 8 May 2006
In March of this year the Crown recognised Te Runanga o Ngati Apa as the Mandated Iwi Organisation to receive the Fisheries Assets. What assets that could be transferred to Te Runanga were handed over in April. One of the most significant milestones of this process was the ratification of a new Constitution, developed to satisfy legislation contained within the Maori Fisheries Act, but which also matched up with the strategic direction of Te Runanga. It is a very robust document.

Staff and Runanga attend “A Christmas Wish” performance- 6 December 2005
Staff and Runanga members attended a performance of “A Christmas Wish”, by a group of Rangatahi at Rangikauia Studio. The Studio is run by Te Rakau is a Charitable Trust and is managed by renowned Actor and Director, Jim Moriarty. The Trust uses a unique Theatre Marae process to work with young people who have come from backgrounds of disadvantage and/or abuse. The process encourages the young people to explore what has happened to them in their lives and the impact of this upon their behaviour, which has ultimately resulted in them being referred to the programme.
“A Christmas Wish” was devised by the 10 rangatahi (aged 14 to 19) who are currently in the full time care of Te Rakau Trust. The show included beautiful haunting songs, strong kapa haka, innovative contemporary dance and heart wrenching drama, laughter, hip hop and overall, a vision of young people dealing with their hurt and moving onwards into the light. The show also explored what their hopes and dreams for the future are. It basically explored their journey from darkness to light. It was a thought provoking and emotionally charged performance.

Ngati Apa Lease of Parewanui School Causes Tension - 11 October 2005
Several members of the Pakeha community expressed outrage over the lease of the former Parewanui school, located seaward of Bulls, by Ngati Apa. The local Ngati Apa subtribes, Ngati Kauae and Ngati Tauira, met with the Pakeha community at the former school to discuss the lease and Ngati Apa aspirations in the area. Parewanui is a very important location in Ngati Apa history. It was the location of the signing of the Rangitikei Manawatu transaction during the 1860s. Parewanui became famous around the turn of the century with the emergence of Ngati Apa spiritual leaders. The first was Mererikiriki, and she was followed by her nephew, Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana. However, by the mid 1900s, Parewanui had fallen into disrepair and all of the Maori families left in search of work. Whilst one or two individuals from the Pakeha community appear to welcome Ngati Apa's return to the area, many appear very unhappy because they have their own aspirations of turning the former school into a community centre. The message of Ngati Kauae and Ngati Tauira is that they are prepared to talk to the Pakeha community and potentially accommodate their needs as well as Ngati Apa needs. However, the hapu have asked a neighbouring farmer to sell between two or three hectares of land for the building of a Marae next to the school. Ngati Apa's ability to build a Marae away for the school would provide the space and capacity to guarantee that there are facilities for Ngati Apa and local Pakeha requirements.

Runanga Meets with Simon Power - 3 October 2005
Te Runanga o Ngati Apa today met with the high flying National MP for Rangitikei, Simon Power. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce Simon to Ngati Apa, and to update the minister about progress with Ngati Apa settlement negotiations. At the end of the settlement process an Act of Parliament needs to be passed by the House of Representatives before Ngati Apa can receive settlement assets. This process is made much simpler when members of the major parties are aware of the background to the settlement. Simon Power is touted as having a big future with the National party, so keeping lines of communication open with Simon makes a lot of sense. Simon today demonstrated his interest in a variety of matters including health service delivery and timeframes for treaty settlements. In conclusion, it was a very fruitful meeting.
Ngati Apa signs an historic agreement for fisheries - 29 September 2005
Ngati Apa kaumatua and leaders today signed an historic agreement with neighbouring tribes which paves the way for Ngati Apa to receive fisheries assets by April 2006. This agreement is a memorandum of understanding between Ngati Apa, Whanganui, Ngati Hauiti, Rangitane, Muaupoko, Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Toa and Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai. This agreement circumvents the requirement for these iwi to agree to coastal boundaries and represents a major step forward for all involved.
First Claims Forum Goes Off Without A Hitch - 25 September 2005
Around 20 Ngati Apa members took the opportunity to meet with Ngati Apa settlement negotiators and historian David Armstrong at Whangaehu Marae today. This was the first claims forum and provided a valuable opportunity for two way discussion between Ngati Apa iwi members and negotiators on issues relating to the historical account of Ngati Apa grievances, commercial redress, cultural redress and overlapping claims. Te Runanga o Ngati Apa intends to convene similar forums in the future as the negotations proceed, and encourages as many Ngati Apa members as possible to attend.
