Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Apa pays tribute 172 years on to the deeds of three Ngāti Apa leaders who signed the Treaty of Waitangi at the mouth of the Rangitīkei River at the seasonal fishing village called Tawhirihoe. The signatories were Te Hakeke, Taumaru (Hamuera Te Raikokiritia) and Mahi (Mohi Mahi). They signed what has been called the Henry Williams Copy of the Treaty.
